Works in a pinch. Too slow and tedious as an ongoing method.

Sounds kinda like a waste of time. Why not just make the two cuts for the dado and then “nibble out” the waste? A 1” travel dial indicator and magnetic base can be bought at Harbor Freight for a few bucks, then you don’t need to mess with making special spacers.
