Hi all.
I found this in a shed full of things a recently widowed friend had that we were sorting for disposal, some through yard sales or ebay if salable enough. Anyway, My best guess is a mortar as in Mortar & pestle or a mallet for tapping a chisel for light carving.

Frankly though, neither seems really very likely.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

That is definitely a mallet for carving.

Can’t really see it in the picture.
The dings on the head should be an indication of how the tool was used.

The juxtaposition of posts #2 and #3 is really just too funny!

Ok then. Seemed a bit too frail for that but for light work I guess not.
Again, thanks all!

Could be a tamp for making sauerkraut

Actually, it’s for knocking out pimps….Why would you want to knock out a hooker, unless she rolled you…?
