How about a way to flag users for review, similiar to craigslist?

Maybe make it so the new user has to be approved after filling out a form of some sort, or give them a probational period where the first few posts must be approved?

I’m a newbie and I’d agree to it. Seems like we’re getting a rash of them in the last week or so.

Martin seems to do a pretty good job of taking care of things… When we see them we should just ignor them and PM Martin. ...just a thought

It’s annoying to message martin every time this happens, only to never have him reply back. The spammers are getting worse if you ask me.

I think recently the internet as a whole has received tons of spammers… I run a message board and we’ve been getting a ton of accounts registering out of Russia trying to peddle diet pills and the like. I have created some unique ways of preventing them from registering, and it has cut down from 20 a day to probably around 3 a week.

I noticed also that since the kids are on summer break, that the bogus posts on craigslist have jumped through the roof.

Julian.. actually that probational period is a good idea. I’m thinking about this issue each day. We will resolve it…

Unfortunately, for the fine folks like Martin, spammers greatly outnumber the good guys and they have a single focus. I’m impressed with how little spam actually gets here considering how much is floating around the web. It’s a nuisance, but so is rain at a picnic. If you pay attention it won’t do you much harm.

As for probation, it’s an interesting idea. However, someone is going to have to monitor those on probation and that could take a fair amount of time. Unfortunately, it’s not a simple task.

Well in most forums I peruse, there are plenty of moderators that watch out for things like this. I don’t see spam like this in any of the other forums i’m involved in.

And how is Martin going to filter out dedicated spammers like me who spend a year learning woodworking and posting projects just so I could infiltrate your site. MMMWUUAAHHH haaa haaaaaaaaaaa! Ok I’m just kidding don’t delete my account!

maybe require people to enter a code? you know, the blurry ones to prevent bots from posting. I’m just putting the idea out there, although I don’t like it. I think it would reduce contributions by people. maybe you need to enter a code teh first 50 times and then after that, you are good to go with your account. That would help us frequent posters.

Yeah, some sort of Captcha before posting would make sense. The number of spam posts in the RSS feed is pretty crazy.

Julian may have the right idea but Martin knows a lot more about computers etc than i and certainly will find a solution.

These latest posts doesn’t seem to be posted by bots. I’m going to add email verification during registration process as a first step. Thanks for good discussion ;)
