Topic tags/keywords: mantel finish construction walnut

First time poster!! Purchased a large walnut slab that is now dry and ready for dye! I plan to use the processed detailed by Mark Stephens at Woodworkers Source. Have a few questions.
The first step in the process of darkening the piece and blending the sapwood is Solar Lux dye. My test pieces have taught me that getting a coat on a large section leads to streaks (at least that way I tried it). Any tips on preventing this? A later step calls for coats of gel stain, will this help blend any streaking?

Last question ( let me know if this needs to be post in a different forum)...this slab is super heavy! The mantel legs are a combo ob boxed 3/4” ply and large corbels. I’m concerned about that it was under built. Any tips on reducing mantel weight without introducing risk of future wood movement? Has anyone tried boring out the back of a mantel to reduce weight?

Much thanks for the feedback!

Make sure it is dry, down to about 5-6 %. Then read THIS.

Good Luck.
