I have some cabinets on my kitchen wall, it doesn’t look like the job was really ever finished 30 some years ago when the house was built. There is no soffitt above them and the corner where the the wall meets the ceiling was not done very good so I want to put a soffitt above my cabinets out of some bead-board.
My dilemma is should I attach the structure to the top of the cabinets, the ceiling or both? If I attach to the ceiling the side going perpendicular to the ceiling joists should not be a problem but the side going parallel to the joists might be because the joist behind the face cabinets is all the way back to the wall so I would have to use anchors in the drywall ceiling.
This is not going to weigh much just what 13 inches of bead-board and the supporting structure and some decorative molding weighs.
Trying to avoid going up into the attic if possible as I am 6’5” and 290lbs as well as pretty clumsy.
