As you can see from my earlier post I am considering upgrading my current 6” jointer. I have added a couple of models to my consideration list. Here are the ones I am considering:

Powermatic 1285
Grizzly G9860ZX
Felder A941
Hammer A3 41A

Other than the obvious size difference from 12” to 16”, any recommendations, thoughts, comments both good and bad are appreciated. I’m trying to make a some what educated decision in narrowing down the one to purchase after having been out of the large tool market for the past few years. I find the past experiences of previous customers is a good place to start.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Well lots of people own something bigger then 6”. That being said, not many folks are going to buy a 9k jointer.

You are not going to find anyone who has used all of these machines. You might… might find someone who has used 2 of them, or at least seen 2 of them. But even that is chancy.

Bottom line is they will all cut wood just fine. The Hammer is not a jointer but a jointer planer, which means its a combo machine and unless you need a combo machine (with this budget I am assuming you do not) there is no reason to buy it. The grizzly is the cheapest and on sale right now at 4,750 dollars. The powermatic is the same price as the hammer at 6k, and the Felder is a crazy high 9k. All of these machines will do what you want to do. I am assuming you are a hobbyist so that means all of these machines will not only do what you want to do but will be EXTREMELY over kill at the same time. Like using a tactical nuke to cut down a tree.

To my mind you would buy the grizzly and use the extra couple of thousand to buy something else. If you really don’t want to buy a grizzly though (and lots of folks don’t) then just buy the powermatic. No one here can tell you what is your best bet for your money because you are the only one that can determine how valuable your money is to you. Most of us would buy a jointer less then 1k and 99% less then 3k and be perfectly happy with it the rest of our woodworking careers. If you have 500k sitting around doing absolutely nothing and you want to burn it on a woodshop, then your choices will be a bit different from everyone elses.

I have a Felder AD 741 (16” J/P). Bought it in 1999. Love it and would do it again. Over kill is great. Believe me you’ll find way to uses the full 16’’ capacity if you have it.
