Well, it’s official. I think I like purchasing hardwoods almost more than I like making stuff out of them. The beginning phases of a lumber hoarder. I need an Alaskan mill badly. I can’t get a woodmizer, I would have to check into rehab.

Picked up a beautiful 5/4 slab of walnut 15” wide x 100” long tonight for a very good price. ($50) Looks to be chainsaw mill cut.

Was air dried and read 10% for moisture so it’s got a little ways to go yet.

It has two decent sized checks in the ends (I assume from not being sealed). Also has a hairline crack about 6” long in the middle.

I plan on holding on to it for awhile before using it. Is there any way I can prevent these cracks from progressing or am I worrying about this too much?

Nah, don’t worry about those two cracks. Keep it at least 12” of the ground with plenty of air flow on both sides.
