A little background. I am in California and local lumber yards are scarce. I did a bunch of research on pricing in the local area and found a pretty competitive place so I went to check out the warehouse. It was in shambles, it had happened to rain that day and the floor had 1-2 inches of water on it. Not ideal for a wood yard obviously so I asked about their special ordered hardwoods etc… and their response was that they would order it and it would arrive there within 2-3 days usually. This was acceptable considering their prices and they also showed me another storage area that was dry and in much better shape.

Fast forward a few weeks and I needed to order about 60 feet of cherry. I call them and place the order on a Monday, and they tell me it will be there Wed. Well Wed came and went and I didn’t get a call back, so I called. The guy told me that I never “actually placed the order”... So I wasn’t happy about it and he told me he would order it right then and that it would be there Friday. Friday came, and then it was supposed to be there Monday… Called Monday, “it’ll be here Tuesday…” Call on Tuesday and am told that I will have it Thursday. So I had lost all patience at that point and spoke to the owner’s wife. She assured me that her husband would go to the main warehouse and personally retrieve the wood and get it to me that night. He was going to deliver it to my house.

well lo and behold he never showed. Not even a text or call to say that he couldn’t make it. I called the office the next day and the wife was not there since it was her day off. Someone else answered and when I asked where my wood was, the guy knew me by name… (without me telling him) and he proceeded to tell me that he was supposed to deliver it, but got caught up or whatever and didn’t want to do it that night. So he said he would have it delivered to my house within a “few hours” Well that few hours turned into about 10 hours later, and apparently they didn’t even have my address correct so they called while on the way to my house.

Now onto the questions:
Have any of you had these types of issues with a lumber yard?
I wanted to order the wood online but was skeptical about it, what have you had in regards to positive or negative experiences with online ordering?

Here’s the doozy… I wasn’t home when they delivered the wood but put it in the shop after dark. On Friday I went out to look at all the wood and it has sun spots on it. It is clearly evident where the wood was stored in the sun and there are clear lines throughout all the pieces. I haven’t ever had this happen to me, but have any of you? Should I just return the wood and wipe my hands clean of this place?

That does not sound like a place worth doing business with to me.

I personally won’t buy lumber I can’t pick out myself. I’m fortunate to have a couple good lumberyards within 10 miles of my office.

Marc, I’m sorry to hear about your mis-adventures and I probably would not purchase from them again, but, then again, you have limited options.

I ordered wood on line once (McKinney Hardwoods) and it was a great experience. The price of the lumber was very fair and the quality was great, but shipping can be a significant consideration. Even with the shipping, the price I paid was comparable to local prices (Albuquerque) with better quality.

There are many woodworkers in California, maybe you can find a couple close to you and add on to their orders when you need stock. HTH

I was told once, that if it looks like shlt on the outside its probably shlt on the inside. You have more patience than I my friend. I’d bring it back and demand a refund.

As much as hardwood lumber cost now there is no way I would do business with a company like that especially if trying to run a business.

I would return it and get my money back and lose their phone number and address.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am struggling with using this wood. Haven’t touched it yet thank goodness, but I think you are all right… Time to return it and find wood elsewhere.

So, I returned the bad pieces of lumber to the place I go them from and the guy told me that that’s how they sell all their wood and that they’ve never gotten a complaint before…

They comped me for the wood I kept too. That was nice of them.

I ended up finding another yard somewhat nearby and they had an amazing selection (at least in comparison) and their warehouse was very nice. I will continue to use them in the future.
