HI everyone. Im finishing up a jelly cupboard and I need to hang the doors using a butt hinge. What are the benefits of cutting out a mortise for the hinges? Do i need to cut out a mortise for them to work properly. Any tips on installation would be appreciated as well.

You didn’t give any diminisions for the cupboard, so w/o knowing the size of the doors, (width and length), it’s hard to know the spacing between hinges…I would use a mortisless hinge if it were me….No mortises to cut out.

If you don’t want to mortise for them, non-mortise hinges are available.

Another possibility is to use European hinges with a 107 degree swingout….That way no hinge will be showing.

But….if you use the butt hinges, I would recommend going to a larger size than what you posted for that length of door…

Thanks Rick – The main thing is im trying to make this cabinet rustic so I wanna show the hinges as much as possible. What size would you recommend for this size door?
