On another forum is a thread for posting photos of your planes. Never one to let a photo go to waste I thought I’d post my working #3 sized planes here.

From left to right: A shop made Krenov style smoother with a Hock O1 iron, a type 13 Stanley with a Hock O1 iron, a V3 Woodriver with a Vertias O1 iron, a post war Stanley with a Hock O1 iron, another Krenov style smoother also with Hock O1 iron, and last a Philly Coffin Smoother with a O1 single iron. Of this group I use the first Krenov and the Woodriver more than the others. The Philly smoother is new and still getting over the shock of moving from the UK to the desert. Once it stops doing stupid wood tricks I expect it will be one of the go to smoothers.

BTW, they are setting on the back side of a Walnut coffee table top that is still being flattened. The front side is almost finished, I used a LN #8 on it and the #8 kicked my butt, I got smart on the back side and dug out the woody, so much better. I do love me some wood stock planes.

Let’s see your working #3 sized smoothers.

BubbaIBA-
As a fellow desert dweller I am interested in the “stupid wood tricks” that Philly plane is doing. How long have you had it? Do you have any guess as to how long it might take to become friendly with the Sonoran Desert? When you ordered it did you tell him/them what it’s new home would be like and did they make any adjustments in the manufacture?
I have a pair of Stanley #3’s. A type 8-9ish that I love and a post WWII type that I’m mild about. But the #3 size is favored by me over the #4 for what I do.

Chuck,

I’ve had the Philly smoother about 6 or 7 months. It has shrunk as it has dried and I’ve had to open the sides a little. I expect it is stable now and ready to go to work. I’ve had a jack on order for awhile and it should be arriving soon. They are sweet planes, the only down side is how long it takes from order to delivery.

Not sure IF this wee one is a #3 size, or smaller like a #2

Since it is not much bigger than a block plane.

Stanley Liberty Bell #122.

It does make a shaving now and then…

Here’s a couple more to join the fray….

My users, front to back , Millers Falls, Stanley #3, and my GTL.

And some in various states of disrepair / tune-up seriously needed. front to back Defiance (Made in Canada model) Shelton, the mysterious green one (says Brilliant on the cap, size is between a 2 and a 3) and my 3C at the front missing parts, but hey that one was a freebie from a CL seller who was happy to get rid of it along with her $20 Stanley 4 1/2. And you’re not allowed to tell me I suck until I get it fixed up and working.

Looking at these pics Im realizing that the spped with which I have bought planes has passed the speed at which I can fix them up lately. Someone HELP!!!

Chris
