I have had great performance over the years from this planer (model 22-580) but suddenly one day I noticed that it started making a rattle noise (like something was loose) when it was turned on. I also noticed that the handle that raises and lowers the cutterhead has a lot of “play” and was drifting about 1/4 turn while planing instead of remaining fixed in place like normal. It appears that despite locking the cutterhead in place like I always do before cutting, the cutterhead assembly now moves and there is all kinds of “play” in the top handle. This is a sudden change and I have been unable to figure out what has caused this problem. Has anyone ever run into this issue before and know how to fix it?
I’ve checked the screws that retain the handles, the locking mechanism “appears to be engaging” as it should, but obviously isnt doing its job anymore. I’ve checked the chain at the bottom and it appears to be ok, its loose but isnt too loose.
Hope one of you have run into this one and can offer a solution.
