I went to Menards the other day and they had 4×4 lumber and the label called it “WHITE WOOD!!!!!” No one could tell me WHAT Specific TREE/WOOD this WHITE WOOD halls from.

Cal anyone tell me.

I used it on my Rustic Kitchen Island and it does not match my PINE parts.

But I did have some fun telling one of the people working there that the WHITE WOOD TREE was a very beautiful Tree. Majestic actually!

The Kid said really. What does it look like.

I said Well its white

It’s probably mixed. The version of the Borg where I’m at is a German chain, and they sell “Fichte/Tanne”, which is spruce/fir. What you actually get could be any one of a number of “white” woods.

Any of various spruces, any of various firs, hemlock, tamarack, unknown species, etc. etc. Don’t expect anybody at the BORG to know anything.

Whenever I tell a “white” lie like that, it’s always good to add, “It’s a well known fact” or “You can look it up.”

All I know is that it’s lighter and cheaper than pine. China maybe? Don’t know.

Lowes sells what they call white wood as well and I looked up the specifications for it at one point and from what I recall it was basically just a catchall term like runswithscissors is saying. Any of a number of woods whatever is cheapest for them at the time meaning it grew really really fast and is very soft.

White wood is apparently a generic term used in the furniture industry. as I understand it, it is any whitish wood which can be used to build, and is finished with a coloured shading laquer finish which gves it the finished colour. No matter how it takes stain, all the colour is in the finish.

I’ve never seen it flogged as “whaite wood” in any lumber wholesaler I’ve ever dealt with so I shall have to look. Could be any wood that is whitish in colour. Maple/birch/maybe poplar

Doesn’t suprise me….anyone looked at dowels in the borgs lately…..laminated out of 1/8” fingerjointed “stuff” disgusting. at least to me

Eric

It can be any of the pines, spruce or true firs.

Trolls? Garbanzolasvegas comes here a lot and ask a lot of questions and get good answers. That a good thing, that’s what these forum are all about.

The least he could do is “pay it forward” any chance he has instead for messing with a kid. If you know he answer tell it, if you don’t say so.

I’m sure he wouldn’t appreciate us giving him bogus answers when he ask questions.

1) I have met some very very sharp people working at the box stores. Very enlighten.

Not long ago when I was in the US for the first time in almost 20 years, I went to a Home Depot. Not only did the salesman know exactly what I was talking about (I couldn’t remember the name of thing), but he immediately offered to show me the related items (correctly), and then proceeded to the next customer waiting, who also was looking for some specialty item… then he did it all in Spanish. My European wife was stunned silly, she’d never experienced either proper customer service or real multi-culturalism in her whole life.

You think your “Borg” sucks in the US? Come to the former socialist world to one of the German franchise Borgs that have taken over. For years I assumed the surreal experience was somehow my fault, but a few months ago in the Borg here (Bauhaus) I ran across a sawdust coated-gray-haired guy intoning at great volume in the graphic lingo of the local dialect word for word all the complaints I’d been harboring. Roughly translated; where do all the salespeople f- off to as soon as a customer appears? how come they have no idea about anything? how come they don’t know what something’s called either in (the official language), or in German, or (the local dialect), or in (the former official language)? (Slovenian, Styrian, Serbo-Croatian) We f- your mother, your mother’s p-y, f’n- f’s, it’s not great philosophy to know the difference between one screw and another… and so on.

I confronted the store manager the other day about this (no one knows what steel wool is? come on) and after some dodging he responded frankly: the team is almost all college students on minimum wage with no commission and they just don’t give a s-t.

Sorry for the rant, carry on.

Certainly cannot be any more idiotic than Lowe’s famous lady…”Assistance needed in the wiring area…Assistance needed in the wiring area”.
And of course, no one ever, ever responds.

I’m still looking online trying to find a Menards store….?
You got to do some research before you start story telling.
