I might be scoring some walnut logs, and would love to share it with some fellow lumberjocks. I am curious if anyone in the chicagoland area might be interested in some freshcut walnut for a very reasonable price. I’ll know more as soon as I hear back from the guy with the trees. -- Julian, Park Forest, IL |

Julian – no one is going to want that black walnut, but since I’m a nice guy I’ll let you store it at my place until you figure out how to get rid of it. -- http://www.north40custom.com -- http://north40studios.etsy.com -- |

I just checked out the trees. I am estimating between 1000-1400 board feet of walnut from trees that i’m guessing are around 100 years old. If all goes well, the fun will begin next weekend. I’m figuring on letting it go for $2 a boardfoot for green lumber, and a little more if you want it kiln dried. For you turners out there who are interested, what sizes would be good for blanks? Would you rather just pick from the logs and cut your own? -- Julian, Park Forest, IL |

I heard that there’s a beetle infestation that target black walnut trees, although that’s only in western US and pretty far from Illinois. Julian just in case, check the logs carefully to make sure someone isn’t trying to sell you diseased trees that are mandated to be chopped down just for a quick buck. Not trying to douse everybody’s excitement and I hope everything is good. I would love some $2/bf walnut too but I’m too far away. But just in case. Found a link here -- Ed |

Don’t worry. They are healthy trees. They are only being cut down because the homeowners hate picking up the walnuts in their front yard. -- Julian, Park Forest, IL |

Will, I hear you. I’m in the same boat as you right now, as I am sure alot of others are. This is why I need to get it cut and sell some right away. I don’t have much money to cover the cost of renting a chipper, paying for the help and then transport, and milling. The allure of getting a quantity of walnut for a good price is so tough to pass up! I’ll keep everyone posted if this happens or not. -- Julian, Park Forest, IL |

I don’t know about Will, or any other jocks that are close, but I’d be willing to lend a hand to lessen the need to hire help. Maybe you could sell ” shares” of the trees. Working could be worth 1 share = so much lumber. X $= so much lumber. Just an idea so us with not a whole lot of cash laying around could help get this lumber into some hands to make great projects -- http://www.grandprairiewoodworks.com http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6453794 |

how much work is it to take care of the fallen walnuts? I would think having 100 yr old treees would be worth the cost, but hey, I’ve never had to do it. If you get this done, any chances you could take some pictures of the milling process? I always love seeing it. I’m about 100 miles too far away to buy though. EDIT: I meant 1000 miles too far away. |

I’ll take pics of the whole process. I’ll need to chip up all of the branches, cut up the branches for firewood/turning blanks, and try and get the heavy logs on the trailer. It’s worth the cost for sure, but the problem is that I am not working much right now( hence all the shop project I have been building), and my wife might have to undergo brain surgery. I hope you are able to get the logs cut up and the lumber sold. It can be difficult to get folks to commit to something sometimes esp when you are on a time frame crunch. I own a portable sawmill and just rolled a walnut log up on it to cut up last night. It is a yard tree that they tried to sell me and eventually they figured it out that it wasn’t worth the gazillions they thought so they just asked if I would just take the two logs. It will probably be a metal magnet but you never know until you open it up. I will have to add them to my blog. It is a worthwhile project that you are undertaking and I wish you success with it. |

Thanks for the encouraging words. I am just waiting to hear from the homeowner to get the okay to go ahead. If I don’t hear from her tomorrow, I’ll have to wait another week, because I’m leaving for a week on Monday for a wedding. -- Julian, Park Forest, IL |

I’d also like to add that most of this lumber will end up 16”-20” wide. When is the last time you saw walnut offered that size? Daren, I know you see it all the time…......Wish I had my own saw mill….... -- Julian, Park Forest, IL |

I just got off the phone with the homeowner, and unfortunately she has decided to keep the trees….. She said that after talking with her neighbors, she discovered that all the houses on her street have black walnuts in their front yards and they were planted at the same time, so to keep with the look of the others, she is keeping them. I’m dissapointed, but I totally understand where she’s coming from. I’m always on the lookout for more trees to cut and mill, so if this happens again, I’ll let you all know. -- Julian, Park Forest, IL |
