Just picked up a Sargent 408 plane today for 8 bucks. From what I can tell based on the trademark stamp on the iron, it appears to be a Type 3. Anyone know much about these? Decent quality? Also is this similar to a Stanley 4?

Its actually in great shape besides the heavy rusting. Obviously it will need lots of tuning and sharpening.

I’m not a Sargent guy, but post some pics over in the hand planes of your dreams thread because I know DonW knows his stuff about Sargents, among others, and he follows along over there.

I will post some pics after a bit of cleaning. Just kind of looking for opinions on quality.

Try this http://www.timetestedtools.com/typing-sargent-bench-planes.html

Be careful typing a plane with the blade. Post some pictures, we’ll help.

What were the diagnostic characters that led you to think that?

you’ll find various, I still think its a type 6. The base style matches. What does the cap look like.

It’s the VBM which should put it between 1910-1918 right? Iron logo matches that era as well.
