We will soon have a vendor section (subforum) in the community for paid commercial sponsors to be able to announce their current promotions and maybe even answer some of our questions about their product or service. These commercial users will be restricted to that forum in the community.

As with all forums within our community, we are expected to express ourselves in a respectful manner.

We will not tolerate threads being started for the sole purpose of bashing a vendor, manufacturer, or service provider. We understand that not all products will be received the same way by all people but that does not give us the right to be rude or confrontational in these forums. Behave yourselves or I will kick your butts into next week! (grin)

I would love to get some input from you about vendors, manufacturers, and service providers you would like to see have a presence here. We, as a community will benefit from these commercial users, as as they will be open and willing to receive feedback about their products and services from us.

I think this is a good idea Cricket, but I hope there will be a definition or guidelines of what a vendor is. Does this apply to people who occasionally sell stuff as part of their woodworking hobby, or is it just the big commercial boys who pay a fee to post here? There used to be a forum for selling, trading, swapping, etc. but I see that has now been changed to just trading and swapping. As a hobbyist who occasionally sells some of my projects, I’d like to know where I should post before I get into trouble. Thanks.

Like the idea – - hopefully with the special section and advance notice, it wont go the way the Baileigh contest did, which got pretty ugly for a while.

Rockler, Harbor Freight, Lee Valley…I’d be interested in seeing them here. Harbor Freight has a great presence on FB; whoever is running their social media is brilliant. Looking forward to the forum launching. :)

This can be a very good thing, if it goes well.

Current promotions and product Q&A sound okay. But many vendors have a LOT more input that they can provide. Project notions, training videos, “best tool for the job” advice, and probably much more. I’d appreciate that content – or at least pointers to where they already have it available on their own websites.

And, of course, I’m sure we’d all appreciate that special LumberJocks promotion code that gives us an extra 25% off EVERYTHING!

However, I am worried about this becoming “bitch central”. I’m wondering why normal LJs have to be able to post to this forum at all? If we have a product review, we already have a place to post that. If we have questions or comments for these vendors, we can just send them a private message and keep it offline. The vendors can use the input to guide the type of content we’d like to see from them.

I understand the frustration and aggravation that all of us occasionally experience with vendors, but offering an irresistible public forum to vent that angst may not be good for anyone.

Instead, just give them a communications channel that makes it convenient for them to give us news and information. Anyone interested can follow the forum. Others can choose to ignore it.

This could work out to be a very good idea. I look forward to seeing how the vendors respond. It will also be a great place for a few of the LJs who manufacture/distribute products to display their goods without drawing any negative comment.

Interesting to see how this goes. Getting answers direct from these venders can be a great thing. I know it will still be argumentative amongst our fellow LJ’s, but sometimes we can figure things out things that they say is within tolerance. Can’t wait.

@cricket:
does “We will not tolerate threads being started for the sole purpose of bashing a vendor, manufacturer, or service provider” mean that we would not be able to express problems we are having with a vendor’s product or their customer service? If it does, then the value of the forum for venders would be vastly decreased.

@jdmaher:
“I’m wondering why normal LJs have to be able to post to this forum at all? ” How about as an alternate way of asking a vendor for help with a specific problem? @cricket says “These commercial users will be restricted to that forum in the community.” So the vendors would not be able to access the other forums to see our questions, problems, or comments.

In general I think a “vendor” forum would be a good idea, if all vendors can have equal access. If this is only for vendors that pay LumberJocks then the value is greatly decreased and the fact that it is a paid forum needs to be made very clear to the members.

Thank you for your very insightful questions. Some of this we will figure out as we go along, but for now this is where I believe we are at.

Asking questions or asking for help with problems in a respectful manner will never be an issue.

Vendors will certainly be able to see and access the rest of the forum. They will simply be restricted to posting their information to one forum, the vendor area. Yes, LJ members will be able to post there to ask questions of the vendors.

The vendor area will be specifically for our designated vendors who are paid sponsors of the community.

@summerfi for regular members who want to buy, sell and trade things (within reason) I see no reason why we can’t use the trade forum for that. Let me check on that.
