How to identify my 1897 plane.

I am not a current woodworker (age 71), but have made simple projects for wife, kids and grandkids. I have an old plane that I cannot identify. It looks exactly like a Wards photo as seen on Google. But there is no ID, other than “PATD 6-12-97” cast into the round circle by the locking lever. Would be happy to post a photo, but I am brand new and do not know how. Thank you.

Pics would definitely help. To post a pic, it needs to be saved on your computer, then click on the “img” button right above the text box for replies. Navigate to the location of your photo an then you can upload it.
