Topic tags/keywords: survey magazine fine woodworking

I got an email from FW yesterday and they wanted my input on their website. (Lot’s of other folks also got it, I’m sure.)

This post is because they wanted comparisons with LJ!

Thought that was cool.

Lee: My point would be that the FW site is a pushing site. They are pushing their information out into the world.

LumberJock is a pulling web site. It only lives because it pulls information for all of the members. From that pull the information is available to it’s members and others. It that, assistance can be given for questions that are presented and asked for.

FW might have published authors creating their articles. But I’d put our knowledge base us against theirs any day.

Karson, I could not agree with you more. It is nice to see this site get the recognition that it deserves but Karson is 100 percent on target about the combined knowledge here vs that of FWW. One of the more important features that we have here is the personal interaction between members rather than simply a 1 way information stream that FWW has.

I just filled out this survey. It is rather lengthy, but unlike most surveys, this one allows your written comment. I also mentioned the personal comradeship that we have here.

same here, filled it last night. I also added in written text that LJ’s strength comes from a positive friendly and tight community.

however I kinda felt that it’s trying to compare apples to oranges. FWW is a published material, and LJ is an online community … 2 different animals. I dont find one ‘better’ than the other in anyway as they really are of different values and experiences. I find FWW very valuable as a source of knowledge that is based on years of research and experiences – sure – some of it is BS, but mostly it’s good stuff. LJ on the other hand is a place to mingle, and see what other’s are experiencing TODAY, what works for different people, and get a glimps of other’s work, ideas, jigs, shops, techniques, etc.

the way I look at it is , I’ll go to FWW to learn a new technique, and then come to LJ to discuss it with everyone and see how to finesse it, or find different variations of it. not really a “this one ? or that one?” kind of a thing.

BUT – touche indeed for LJ to be recognized as an equal

Did mine this mornng. Difference to me is living in a community vs going to the mall. There it’s presented, here it’s discussed and well defined by lots of real everyday experts. Even thought I’m still new here, this is my favorite.
