Topic tags/keywords: ironwood

A fellow LJ who I will not name so they are not besieged with requests (They are welcome to name themselves), offered to send me a piece of Desert Ironwood for the cost of shipping. I jumped at the opportunity and today this flat rate box came in the mail.

It bottoms out my 25 lb postal scale. I went to the bathroom scale, weighed myself, then weighed myself again holding the ironwood. The scale can’t make up it’s mind but says it is between 26-30 lbs. There were smaller pieces of an interesting cork-like material that may be part of the bark from this tree. I’m going to try stabilizing some and turn it. My phone is exaggerating the colors. The dominate color is a cool, chocolate brown (walnut like color); the streaks of purple and other colors are barely perceptible. It is more beautiful in person than in the pictures and I am excited to have it. Big thank you to the fellow who sent this. I have absolutely no idea (yet) what I will make from it. Feel free to toss out ideas.

An ironing board? :)

Good luck with that chunk.

Now that’s a “hunk-a-hunk-a” wood

Great gift, you’re very lucky Rick !
Beyond the weight, what size is the block, that’d give a better idea on what you could make.
I’ve seen mallet heads of late, talk of turning a front knob for a plane but up to you.
(mind your toes whatever you decide ;-)

Holy poop. I’ve got a little ironwood carved cactus on my desk. Love that stuff.

Good deal Rick. A mallet is the first thing that comes to mind. I’m saving a piece for one when I make up my mind for the design. Good stuff to use for any type of tool. Have fun with it. Nice to see the LJ spirit going around.

It’s roughly 11×11x5. A mallet is tempting but it’s awfully nice wood for a mallet. I like nice things but deep down I think utilitarian items should be made of wood good for the purpose but hopefully I can come up with some special projects to show off the ironwood.
