I know this is a personal aesthetics question, but do people generally point the cathedral grain upwards or downwards? I’m building a trestle table base, and the legs will be 8” wide.

I think the general consensus is that the arch pointing up is more pleasing.

Most people, me included, usually point the cathedrals upwards.

Thanks guys. That’s what my instinct told me as well. I happen to be making a table out of FWW article, and their leg had a downward pattern – made me stop and question myself. Upwards it is.

For legs, I would personally try and use vertical grain if at all possible.

What about the direction of the cathedral on veneered panels like on kitchen cabinet doors? I remember reading a recommendation for “up” on the wall cabinets and “down” on the base cabinets.

my guess

trees eventually point to the sky

bad things happen when you nail a horse shoe upside down on a barn and nobody ever built a cathedral that pointed south with out winding up in hell
