Topic tags/keywords: planer bearing

I’m looking at buying a Delta 22-580 planer from a classified ad. The owner says that it needs a new bearing, and he is asking $65 for it. To me, a decent planer at $65 is something to leap at. However, I’ve never tried to replace a bearing on a newer benchtop planer. Has anyone done it with this model (or similar)?

I think I would try to get it for less. I don’t think it’s to hard to change the bearings on the head. Right now the planer is junk and it will be until the bearings are replaced.
The planer is a reliable lunchbox planer when it is running. I had an earlier model. It worked well. I replaced it with a DW735.

The above website will give you an idea of what parts are still available and cost.

9i have this planer and love it. i just replaced the switch after 10 years. it took me 3 days to get a replacement switch. it is a great planer and can have minimum snipe if you set up properly.

Make sure you can still get parts. I have the 22-560 and it is obsolete. Well not to me but you can’t get parts for it. I keep jerry rigging it and so far so good.

I have the same planer and recently got it running right after replacing blades, locking bar and the in feed roller. Parts are not always available but I have had luck with acetoolrepair.com which apperently has joined forces with toolpartsdirect.com since my last order … no idea if that changes anything.

Like johnstoneb said I would try and get it for less if not free. With a bad bearing and who knows what else … it’s not worth much.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I really appreciate it. I sent the guy a follow-up email, but I’ve yet to hear back from him. We will see.

I’ve had a 540 since 91, still use it in the shop for small projects and or when I don’t want to change out the knives on the JPM13.
