FYI to all lumberjocks…..After some discussion about facebook on this site….I have cancelled my facebook account. One of the things that made me do that was the fact that I was not able to delete some of the pictures that I had on facebook. In other words….once its on….it’s on and you can’t delete them! I’ve had some strange vibs about the site for some time but now I just didn’t feel comfortable with it at all! Call me an old-fart but when I can’t remove something from my computer, I get a little worried. I hate to think that all that info is still there to be accessed by anyone with a little computer know-how. Anyone else out there feel the same way?? -- George..." In fact, they never close or cancel an account, instead, they inactivate it. I feel the same way, I “cancelled” that crap several months ago. -- Nature is my manifestation of God. I’m not a big fan of Facebook as it mostly seems a bit narcissistic, but it is a decent way to connect and stay connected with people that you don’t see everyday. With that said, I think the disadvantages of them storing info (as many other companies already do and have for years) don’t yet outweigh the advantages. The reactions above seem a little “Area 51” to me. If I wanted info on someone there are far better ways to get it than photos on Facebook. You’d be shocked at what I could pull on most people by lunchtime, and I’d get it from people you know and trust. On another topic, do you want your medical records purged everytime you leave the doctor? Or do you only pay your bills and such in cash? If no, you are already leaving a massive amount of useful data out there in the ether :) And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. You should read Carl Sagan’s Demon Haunted World, it should make you a bit more skeptical the next time you ponder possible conspiracy theories….. Too bad you didn’t give it a bit longer. I’m sure you aren’t deleting photos correctly. I have dozens of friends and family and no one is experiencing such problems. Glad you have LJ’s. -- Just 'cause a cat has kittens in the oven, it don't make 'em biscuits. |

To give you an example of the invasiveness of facebook…..a few weeks ago I got a message from my niece who asked me to join this particular group. I found it strange as this wasn’t like her, so I sent her an email asking her about the message. She said she had never sent anything like that…..SO ….....who sent it and why??? The are more and more of these types of requests from “friends” who want you to go to different sites or join a group.
I understand where the carver is coming from and yes there’s not much we can do about all that data that’s out there about us but it makes me feel better that I’ve reduced the amount of personal information that people can harvest about me. -- George..." My understanding of the Facebook picture thing is that once you post something anywhere on the web, including LJs, it’s always there. Other people download it and deleting it from your computer or your account doesn’t delete it from anywhere else it was deposited. This fuss got started, I thought, when Facebook tried to make this plain in there user agreement when in fact it’s always been that way. They have made other changes a lot of people don’t like. I’ve not used it long enough to recognize the changes. Is this a misunderstanding on my part? I’m also connecting with old friends from high school, 30 years ago, on Facebook. I don’t know of any other way. -- Father of two sons. Both Eagle Scouts. |

Let me first stat that the only reason I now have a Facebook account is because a nephew, on an exchange program in China while attending Florida State University asked family members to sign up so we could see the pictures he was posting on his travels. This was August 08 and it was absolutely cool seeing him in is travels. Since then, I have reconnected with friends from high school, grade school and Kindergarten! I have networked with differant groups and garnered business and simply had a great time. |

I am on facebook and I do also like it due to the fact I also found old high school buddies, etc. I also know what you are talking about, getting notifications for things you did not or never wanted to be notified of. I think and I do say THINK that the niece thing happened due to one of her friends who probably did it. That’s their way of getting these “Friends” together. I also can tell you that YOU and only YOU decides who can see things you post on facebook and to whom you want to share these things with. In other words if you want Aunt Becky to see a picture but not your friends mother, you can do that in the settings part. Just like here at LJ’s you can get e-mail notifications for some things , all things or nothing. It is all about what you put in your settings. I will agree that I feel out of all the places out there that I have tried, facebook seems to be a bit complicated. I have mine set up with nothing but my family and my “Real” friends. But there are members of my family that are not going to be interested in say pictures of my town, and there are going to be pictures my friends really are not going to be interested in of my great Aunt Bertha. So it really is all in the settings, with that said I will repeat that this old fart (me) has had a hard time navigating the place, and if it were not for the fact that on facebook I am updated constantly by those I love the most I too really probably would not be using it. -- Allison, Northeastern Ca.
