Trying to sketch up a design for a few built-ins for a playroom in the basement. This room also acts as a spare room for guest. It has a pullout couch currently. I want to build a bookshelf/bench along one way. The bench i’m going to take the mechanism out of the current couch and incorporate it. I have most of that figured out.
I’m also trying to built drawers in the space under the stairs. Currently the void is 41” deep. That’s when I priced 40” metal drawer slides…. ~$140 a set at lee valley for 36”. Does anyone have a cheaper supplier? what about dovetail wood runners with slick tape? or possibly a track with castors? I’m too cheap to buy 5-6 sets at that cost.

Should also mention that the floor is carpet.

Any suggestions?

Use hardwood runners made of hard maple, skip the slick tape and rub beeswax on them. For years the old craftsman did this and it worked fine. Every once and a while you will have to reapply the beeswax but really not an issue.

I’ve used them for dressers but wasn’t sure they would be good for 40” and more weight.

Unless you are going to fill them with Gold should be no problem with a reasonable weight Load and will slide without a problem.
