Topic tags/keywords: firewood wood splitting

I saw this, and had to share.

Immediately, the possibility of harvesting short pieces of lumber came to mind…and they can all be quarter sawn!

This is not my video, and it’s posted here for its entertaiment value only.

Looks like a heavily-weighted arm, counterbalanced with an auto coil spring, and a maul head make splitting n easy task…and why not harvest lumber smalls the same way??

That is cool.. sure beats a splitting axe or dealing with the hassle (and slow speed) of a hydraulic splitter. I might have to break out the welder and see if I can rig up something similar.. I have a couple of old coil springs laying around that might just work :)

Cheers,
Brad

Quarter sawn? More like quarter-split!

That looks like a great tool for splitting very short, straight grained woods only. I split a LOT of wood and it would not work on the woods I split (20-24” length with lots of elm and non-straight grained woods).

Thanks for all the good comments!
Of, course this not for everybody, but I grieve over nicely figured woods going straight into the fireplace. For the individual who might benefit from short pieces for jewelry boxes and keepsake chests, this would be a cool way to glean interesting wooden components. Squaring off your yield can result in quarter-sawn if oriented correctly. Anyway, in this I saw a cool, lo-tech project that might be of interest to those who like to saw out their own lumber smalls.

True enough, discovering straight-grain blocks makes steam-bent baskets or small furniture a cool possibility. Plus, eh, what the hey, if you don’t like what your split log yields… save it for the campfire. A win-win if ever there was one!!
