Wouldn’t it be nice to have a jig database? I’m thinking having it as a searchable or browseable feature. -- He said wood...http://hickbyassociation.blogspot.com/ |

Sounds like a great idea. You might think of having some way to add ratings or votes: I can imagine searching on ‘tenoning jimg’ and having a hundred hits. -- Chris |

Good idea. If this wouldn’t kill the idea: For those that have SketchUp abilities, a little 3D model would be nice. I’m thinking of the recent “best ever super sled” that was offered up. -- Don, San Antonio, TX |

That would be a great idea. I hate searching numerous webpages and going through lots of advertising to find a jig. A simple one stop shop for jigs would keep me off the internet and in the workshop If anything comes of this idea, let us know! |

I’m all for it too. Great idea. Let’s get it started soon. Anyone know where to begin? -- Jerry--A man can never have enough tools or clamps |

YES but, it requires a lot of work, webspace, management etc… Honestly many off the shelf web programs would probably work with adaptation, but I hardly have time to do coding for my own website nowadays LOL… Unless of course this is a subtle hint for Martin :P -- San Diego, CA US Navy |

Why not just start a thread and call it tips and jigs. Anyone can add to it. It could be an original jig or tip or one that’s been around for a while. A lot of the new people on the site may have never seen it before so it would help them. -- JJ...... I guess you could say I'm a 54 year old "juniorjock". — Make things with wood. |

I figure that it would definitely take a while for a new feature to be built into the site, so I like the idea of a forum post. How about expanding on that a little… Have a new forum folder marked jigs and in there have subfolders for things like specific tools (routers, tablesaws, etc.) or have it for types of activities for the jigs (dadoing, sharpening, dovetails, etc). This way, we could all benefit from the jigs being posted and there would be comments and search-ability/browse-ability. In the mean time, if it becomes as popular of a feature as I’m sure it will be, there can be a working solution while the permanent feature is being designed and implemented. I’ve got a couple of jigs that I know others have probably used that I would love to add to this if it gets started. ~DB -- He said wood...http://hickbyassociation.blogspot.com/ |

A question, what forum do you think a thread of this type would be best? Under Working Skill Share or Woodworking Tools, Hardware and Accessories? -- JJ...... I guess you could say I'm a 54 year old "juniorjock". — Make things with wood. |

Well, we will see how it goes. I started a thread in the “Woodworking Skill Share” foum. It is called Jigs, Fixtures and Tips. I think the problem with having one thread full of jigs is that it will get really long and people will have to scroll through the whole thing to see if the jig they need is there. What about setting up a new user named “Jigs” and have people post their jigs to “Jigs” projects. I guess someone would have to manage/moderate the “Jigs” user, but at least each jig would have images and have its own page. If you do want to do a single thread, then I suggest that people do a jig as a project on their own profile, then embed a project widget in the jig thread. Obviously, everyone can do what they want with this, but it sounds like we want this to be useful to each other, and so I’m just suggesting some ways to make it organized and easily browsable. -- http://www.north40custom.com -- http://north40studios.etsy.com -- |

That’s why I think simply adding a folder for Jigs would be better than a single forum post. All we would need to do is put in under the main forums next to the other topics. Then, you can post up your jig and even link it to a project page if you would like. We could just all do projects and “tag” them for jigs and such, but what about the instances where we have a jig that is pretty simple that we got from another website? Would it count as a project if all I did was post a link with no pictures to someone else’s website? ~DB -- He said wood...http://hickbyassociation.blogspot.com/ |

When we’ve discussed this before, I think it’s turned out to be more complicated than it sounds to just add another forum or divide the projects – lots of work for Martin. Plus, there’s some concern that we’ll have a million tabs before long – instead of “projects” it will be “tables”, “chairs”, “picture frames”, “entertainment centers”, “jigs”, “cabinetry” ... you get the picture. If we start sub-dividing projects, when do we stop? DannyBoy, I think if there was a moderated user named “Jigs”, the moderator could post links to jigs in a blog on the “Jigs” profile. -- http://www.north40custom.com -- http://north40studios.etsy.com -- |

yeah, I agree Danny (I was just kicked out of JuniorJock’s thread… :o( ..lol) we currently already have the projects section where people can tag them with “jig” – so that is old news. what I think would be better, is to have a totally separated section for Jigs just like we have “projects” and “blogs” this will separate “projects” which should really be aimed at woodworking projects, and take Jigs and fixtures out of there, and on their own section Peter – having a moderator have to moderate a user “jig” would be the thing that will make the moderator overwork…. -- When in doubt - There is no doubt - Go the safer route. |

(Boring day at work today…) Peter, I get that. I would hate for it to be too complicated. If we had a profile called Jig that was moderated, maybe their total setup would be that they keep track of any jig related posts and incorporate them into that profile. Anyone who is interested in Jigs would get a notice when he/she posted a new jig or blog. If you had one that you wanted to feature, you PMed “Jig” and he/she would post it as a blog and you would be created as the resource. I could see this working very well. Question is: Is there already a member named “Jig”? -- He said wood...http://hickbyassociation.blogspot.com/ |
|

Don’t know – it could be “JigSpot” or “JigSource” if “Jig” is already taken. Of course, PurpLev has pointed out the real problem with my idea: who’s going to moderate it? It might be a lot of work, and someone would have to commit to doing it. And if that someone got sick of doing it and never came back to LJ, then the whole jig collection would be hostage. -- http://www.north40custom.com -- http://north40studios.etsy.com -- |

HAHA…. jig hostage… I think that anything that has to do with normal traffic on the site should be automated, and not humanly moderated. thats why I had originally thought that controlling this would be somewhat of an impossible task. BUT – as I said before, Jigs ARE a different animal than projects – unlike Tables/Chairs/Toys which are all woodworking projects (the reason we go into the workshop in the first place) Jigs are somewhat of a “side” projects we end up doing – and are suplementary tools, and can earn their own section on Lumberjocks. setting this up would take minimal (considering all other options that is) work, and it would prove to be everything we here discuss and want this to be. -- When in doubt - There is no doubt - Go the safer route. |

I will say again what I’ve said before on these type of threads. This has already been accomplished and implemented by our benevolent dictator Martin. He ingeniously added a feature whereby you can “TAG” your projects with a word of your choosing (That’s right! You can make up any tag you want, anytime you think a new one is needed!!!) so that all similar projects can be grouped and viewed using the already existing project browser tool. I think the biggest problem with the people responding to this thread right now is, they have never used a “TAG” or searched for something using the “TAG” feature. The “old news” is now being recycled so that new users can see how COOL it has always been. If you have time or an opinion on this subject, you owe it to yourself and the rest of the thread to go look at the projects “TAGGED” jig before you try to reinvent a square wheel and use a jig to round it off. There are currently 223 project “TAGGED” as a “JIG”. If you want to really help the site, in my humble opinion, you need to suggest ways to spice up the existing “TAG” system to meet the needs you have listed for the jigsite. -- Jim |
