Here is a video for the hand tool folks. It shows how it was really done. ;^)
These are fairly long videos, but well worth the watch. I would suggest watching the first one all the way through.
The next one on the right is how wall paper used to be made.

The wheelwright video is also impressive. The bench dog arrangement is neat ,and notice they use bow saws for everything. That site goes on my favorites list.

It’s too bad this site isn’t in English. I love watching that guy make those shoes. The way he uses that small hatchet is amazing. What a craftsman. Great site.
