I currently have a Delta 12” bench top drill press and for the most part it suits my shops needs. However there are times when I could really use more throat depth than what the Delta provides. I am looking at the Grizzly catalog and I see a 5 speed Bench Top 34” Radial Drill Press (G7945). From the picture it looks like this is exactly what I am looking for. However the write up says that it has a 34” adjustable swing. Based on what I see it looks to me that the whole motor assembly slides (in and out) so that you could have considerable (assuming 34”) throat depth. My confusion comes in looking at the table as it looks like it falls way short of being able to support that depth. If building a larger table is all I have to do I am fine with that. I just want to make sure I understand how this tool works. I get that the head swivels to drill at different angles but I want to know if it also slides to give me the ability to drill wider material.
The floor model is only $20 more and it looks like that has a table that swings out farther. Space is more of a consideration than the extra $20 so that is why I am looking at the smaller unit.
Does anyone have one of these, and if so could you shed some light on its capabilities and functionality?
I am not looking for pinpoint accuracy in the drilling process just the ability to drill reasonably straight holes in wide material.
