Is there any reason a hollow chisel mortiser could not be used as a drill press?

I’d say:

1. column is too close to the center of table to allow much depth for larger pieces (mortises are usually done on narrow(er) parts)

2. bit clearance to table is small – does not allow you to rotate your table away for greater height clearance under the bit

3. speed of drill is set for mortising applications, and does not have the versatility of drilling speeds.

4. cumbersome bit changing procedure (I must say that having the Jacobs toolless self-tightening chuck is priceless!)

just to name a few…
