Is this deja vu or what?

-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.

Ok, the secret’s out.

So here goes: I know nothing about Greene & Greene. I think I first saw it on this site.
From what little I know about them, I appreciate their point of view, but frankly their furniture must be a pursuit of an ideal but it does not appeal to me.

it seems cool that they learned about woodworking at university ( why wasn’t that offered when I went? I might have preferred it to mathematics) but the flipside is : they learned woodworking at a university.

I’m sure I’ll be in the minority with my point of view…but you did ask.

I must of missed something.
Anyway i,m in the mood to start a fight, so here goes.
Greene and Greene are overrated. While they are the darlings of the Arts and Craft crowd and may have drawn a lot of pretty pictures most of their stuff was nicked from the japanese, and it was all made by someone else anyway. We, as woodworkers, should be kneeling at the altar of the brothers Hall as they were the ones who had to decipher the scribbles to come up with the pieces we so admire today. Yes i am aware that without the scribbles of GandG the furnishings would not exist in the first place but it raises my bile that designers take all the glory and the craftsman, whose blood, sweat and skill, are continualy forgotten.
Charles Rennie Macintosh! don,t get me started.

I have to give you a BIG THANK YOU!!! Debbie.

I clicked on my Greene & Greene style table, & I found out that none of my Videos worked.

I guess there was a code change, or something when I changed computers.

I ended up having to edit all of my posts on this project, & my blogs.

I’m going to have to check my other videos.

I like the Greene and Greene style. I better because I’m building my kitchen cabinets in that style.

It’s been slowed by the cold weather, Glue doesn’t work too well in cold weather, and I’m too cheap to heat the shop just to watch glue dry.

glad I could help Dick :)

that’s an interesting vision: sitting in the cold watching glue dry.
So what is it about G&G that you like, Karson?

I have built nothing in that style, but I want to.

In my (not so) humble opinion, G&G is beautiful, functional and inspirational. Of course, I say, it appeals to me because I’m an old fashioned kind of guy, having been started in life in an old fashioned time.

Victorian architecture is my favorite style for houses (although it clashes somewhat with my passion for timber framed buildings) and I can just see a fantastic computer station in my study, in my beautiful Victorian style home, built with the G&G influence.

Not that Victorian style can’t get along with timber framing, but many of the Victorians I’ve seen were balloon framed structures. I think a sturdy timber frame would be a great platform for a lovely Vic!

But, to get back to the subject at hand, I like G&G furniture and as soon as I can manage I want to make something in that style.

Best regards,

d

For some it might be a bit boxy looking, drab, or just to plain. The furniture was to blend into the room, not to be a focal point. I like it because you customize it to suit your own tastes, to me anyway.

I’m with Daryl (kiwi1969), without the collaboration of Peter & John Hall, the Greene bros may never have become so recognized. After all it took almost 50 years for the Architectural Institute to recognize their work.
If any one is seriously interested in this body of work they should take a look at the Greene & Greene group in Yahoo. There are great discussions and loads of pictures posted mostly by commercial woodworkers but also by hobbyists like me. What makes the furniture unique and valuable is that each piece was made for a specific room in a specific client’s home and never reproduced or put into production by the Halls or the Greenes. In the summer of 2007 a Blacker HOuse dining chair sold at auction for over $950,000. Here’s a photo of the Hall brothers shop where all the furniture was made.
