There is a Record No 073 on CL for $150 near me… seems kind of expensive for a 2nd hand plane but I am looking for a large shoulder plane… any thoughts?

Thanks

Luke

Both the Lie Nielsen, and Veritas plane cost $250 new. And I like them both.
the couple of old record planes that I have are ok, but do not compare the LN or Veritas.
the only way I would buy the record is if I got it really cheap. Like under $50. Don’t get me wrong
My budget has only allowed me two new planes. A med. LN shoulder, and a veritas Large router plane.
Everything else is the older stuff. Maybe I would spend a little more than $50 if it was mint but for $150
I would wait till I could get the new one.
Lie Nielsen was just in town a few months ago with one of there road shows, and thats when I got my shoulder plane.
I also got to play with any plane they make. I had no idea, just no comparision to my record planes.

The machining on my Veritas medium shoulder plane is impeccable
and highly precise. It’s a very nice plane.

I’d pass on the record plane.

Good advice above as well.

Thanks all I was leaning away but thought I’d ask. I have a Veritas small shoulder plane that I was gifted and I really love it. I really could use a large shoulder plane on my current project but I will have to make do with my #78 and the small shoulder… I don’t quite have the $250 to drop right now and would rather wait until I do and get the Veritas.
