Topic tags/keywords: question maple finishing

I need to dye some figured maple (duh!)....

Trying to bring out the figure, sorta along these lines….

But in this tone/color….

I would like to use the Transtint Honey Amber,
But don’t have time to wait for an online order to arrive.
There are no local places that carry any dyes, that I have been able to find.

I will be doing a search….
but thought I would give the fine folks here a chance to chime in.

Is there a home brew dye that would give me the results that I am after.
I don’t want to do an oil stain, as again, time isn’t on my side.
I am not setup for spraying, so looking for a brush/wipe on solution.

Thanks, in advance, for the help & sharing your knowledge!!!

I saw it on the shelf at Woodcraft. Got a store nearby?

Mike,
The closest Woodcraft is a three hour drive….
& I’m seriously considering it!!!

I’ve never tried tried it, But I’ve heard that Rit fabric dye (which is readily available) works on wood. There are a couple of yellow shades that look pretty close to what you’re going for.

I keep saying I’m going to try it, so if you do, let us know how it works out.

might try some acrylic hobby paint
(wally world has small bottles
in the craft section)
just mix a little in some wipe on finnish
try it out on some scrap

i use it in epoxy
and it seems to mix with many finishes well

Fabric dye is not very color fast,General finishes sell some dye stain if you hve a source for that, if not how about some wiping stain Sherwin Williams will custom mix any color you want and it’s quick drying and easy to apply .

+1 for RIT fabric dye….. Important notes…As a1Jim pointed out, keep the finished box out of sunlight …. You may want to purchase a couple colors to blend to get the amber look….

I made one of these some time ago and it turned out well…. Fun to make….Although I used transtint, reviewing the project widget pasted below may help move your progress along faster or PM me if you have questions….

Best of luck….

Charlie,
Will do…. especially if I fail miserably!!!

Dad (David),
I like that idea….
I’ll probably try several samples….

Jim,
We do have a Sherman Williams….
I’ll need to look it to that option.

K,
Although that box is on my build list….
That was just to show the figure/effect I’m looking for.

Yours came out great….
When I do build mine, I can only hope for similar results!!!

Thanks for the input, all.
It is GREATLY appreciated!!!

Randy, I’ve seen food coloring used. Not sure of the color fastness of it. Bazz135uk uses leather dye
as recommended by LJ Wiz. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/104252
