Alright, here is the problem. I have the opportunity to purchase a 20” Jet 3hp planer for short money. This thing weighs close to 800lbs, and my shop is in my basement. Does anyone know if the motor/cutterhead will come apart from the rest of the unit easily? I have a bulkhead with 6-7 steps and I don’t know if I could get this thing in there with my friends. Any advice as to how this thing might come apart would be geatly aprreciated.

I would set up some 3/4” ply on the steps and make sure it is one piece or screwed together with a 2×2 or 2×4 and then slowly slide it down the stairs with the help of friends and a come-along at the top of the stairs. I would not attempt to remove anything off the machine. Planers can be a pain to readjust I am basing these comments with the understanding that the stairs are wide enough to accommodate the machine.
