If I want to cut 1/4 or 3/8 box joints on my saw stop cabinet saw, will I have to get a different brake cartridge? Would like to know what anyone else knows about this.

Yes unless you cut an 1/8” at a time. You could use a router mounted in a table.

I have a SS and cut a fair amount of box joints. I use the Freud box joint blade set and yes, the dado brake cartridge is required because the blade set is 8” diameter. You could use a dado set, too, but again, the 8” diameter means needing to use the brake cartridge for the smaller blade.
