With the recent scam attempts on this site I thought I would pass this one on from the Philippines. I was involved, thankfully not financially , but I got to see it first hand. First a history lesson. When the japanese occupied this country in the second world war they used it as a staging post to ship all the riches they could lay their hands on back to japan, gold, silver ,gemstones you name it it,s here. Gold literally falls out of the mountains of Mindanao. When General macarthurs troops liberated the nation, many japanese buried their hoards in caves in some very remote regions hoping to return and claim it, they never did, and to this day legends and rumour abound of vast wealth just lying in caves waiting to be discovered. And this is where the scam starts. You see some of the gold HAS been found, just enough to whet the appettite of the treasure seekers and fortune hunters and lend a grain of truth to the legends.
Fast forward to 2007, myself and my former boss are standing in an underground car park , in front of us in the trunk of a car is a bar of gold, REAL gold, it,s been tested as pure as it can be, the only thing left to do is secure a price for the rest of it , another 20 bars just like it! But there is a catch,( there is always a catch) The other 20 are deep in the mountains in the heart of NPA (communist new peoples army) controlled northern Luzon. Not the place for foriegners, but our new friends will go there on our behalf , they just need half the money as a sign of good will to prove to the golds owners that we are geniune buyers ,not government operatives setting up a sting. You can all see where this is going right! This is potentially worth millions and so many people stump up the cash and then sit in a hotel for days waiting for a contact that will never come. Thats the scam , there was only ever 1 gold bar! and that gold bar has been circulating since the end of the war ,earning its owners more in cash than it would be worth if they just sold it. And there is plenty more where that came from, I have seen photo,s of treasure hoards posed with rusty ww2 rifles and helmets just to give them some validity. It,s mostly fake ,or is it? What if you took the risk and it was true!, some people come back again and again hoping that the next one will be real and losing thousands of dollars each time.
I could also tell you of the scheme cooked up between wall street and the US treasury dept in the 1920,s to buy all the gold they could get their hands by printing million dollar notes and trading them throughout asia and how during the war the notes mostly all disappeared and how the treasury dept denied all knowledge of them after the war when the asians tried to cash in what they had left and about the mysterious treasury dept warehouse fire in the 1980,s and how these notes are resurfacing . And just how did noth korean counterfeiters get their hand s on notes that don,t exist? But i,ve meet some of these characters and they scared me so I will leave this tale for another day, besides none of it,s true, it,s just a story….or is it?

Some people will do anything to make easy money, and hurt anyone in the process. It is sad.

I dunno. Most scams are so easy to see thru, especially those Nigerian scammers. They’re fun to play with and maybe get them to jump thru a couple of hoops to boot. Use a fictitious email address for responses…they do!

But this scam rings fake because of all the secrecy. Why show me a bar of gold in a hidden location? Why not just walk in and toss it on my desk? And why involve me and not the president of some big buck company?

Dadoo , I guess you gotta know the history of the place to really understand how people get hooked in, the secrecy is all part of it, the NPA and the government have been fighting a covert war here for decades, people can just disappear from both sides and fear surrounds the whole story, they ain,t about to just walk in with that much gold in their pocket and throw it on anyones table, people get shot here for way less than that, you gotta go to them so they can control the game. It,s not like the nigerian thing, here you can touch it and smell it and the evidence is truly convincing. But play the game long enough and you start to see the same photo,s and meet the same characters. And believe me big buck presidents have been taken for a ride just like the rest of us.
The glimmer of gold as made fools of men for centuries and will continue to do so.
