For those that are interested, I have posted a very short and basic multiple choice survey, with regards to Panel Saws, on my web site. The Tab for it is right next to the “Home” tab. I would be interested to know what folks think. Thank you in advance. Ron Oh yeah. It’s BontzSawWorks.Net

I think there’s probably a small market for them, but since there isn’t anyone making custom panel saws right now and the only ones you can get are not very good quality, I think there is at least a little market. You’re right, the taper grinding is going to be the hard part. Can a surface grinder do that?

There are various panel saws available that are not 1095 spring steel from what I can tell. A couple of the makers do use 1095, of course, but only make 20” versions. With all the vintage panel saws available, if you can find one with lots of life left, the prospect of going through all the trouble of making them becomes questionable. As far as the tapering is concerned, a dedicated CNC type surface grinder would work if you have one large enough. Say a 24” to 30”. Chemical milling could be a more viable option if you could get someone in the US to actually do it on a lower volume basis. NASA has it done all the time. Priced a space ship lately? :) Trying to keep everything within the US or Canada is another issue. I have no doubt Japan or China would certainly make them for you if enough volume were met. But no thanks. The last time I checked I was not a millionaire. :( So I am left with finding alternative methods that though slower and more labor intense, may still be viable on a small scale. Besides, they will be custom after all. If at all. Just not production. So just more contemplation at the moment than plans. Take care.
