I just purchased my first hand plane and along with that I purchased a Trend 1000 diamond sharpening stone as well as a King waterstone to sharpen and hone the new plane iron. I’ve never done this before so was going off of what I saw on youtube. I used soapy water on the diamond stone and when I was done I cleaned the stone with clean water, dried it and used the cleaning eraser that came with the stone, but I have some stain spots on the stone that have the faint color of rust and I’m wondering if I screwed up by using water on this instead of lapping fluid. Anyone have any advice on this?

I have been using the Trend diamond stones for a while with exactly the same method. Soapy water while sharpening, a little re-spray and wipe them off. My finest stone has had some similar rust stains as well, but I’ve never been too worried about it. I figured some of it was probably the metal ‘dust’ from sharpening not getting cleaned off completely.
