Sorry if I am in the wrong place. I am new to the woodworking world and really enjoying it thus far. I am currently working on building a platform bed for my wife and I. Everything is moving along nicely but I looking for advice on how to attach my headboard.

The headboard is 3 1×8s joined with dowels and is roughly 82 inches long. This needs to attach vertically to the frame. The frame is a 1×12 sitting on top of a 2×6. So to drill up into the headboard I would need to go through the 2x and 1x. How far into the headboard should I go? Or can I go without splitting the wood? Would it be better to attach it with glue and dowels?

Also should I support the back of the headboard with anything? Or will a few screws be able to hold it up without them cracking or breaking through the headboard.

Thanks for any input.

I’m having trouble visualizing your setup. Drawings or photos would help.

Here is a photo of the bed. Note that I am using 1 bys instead of the 2 bys in the photo.

It seems like you’re going to need some bracing. Can you brace behind the headboard ?

From the looks of your sketch in my opinion you should not have any problems with using either 1/4 or 5/16 lag bolts or threaded inserts in the head board and attaching to the platform through the 2x and 1x material. This looks like it should be very steady and with no movement from the frame. If there is any chance of movement in the frame that it would be recommended to use some bracing on the head board. But the if you added a 2×2 along the bottom of the head board on the back to give a wider surface to attach the head board in my opinion with at least 4 fasteners should be adequate.

For the fastener depth in the head board I would suggest 1 1/2” for a lag bolt or using 1” long inserts.
