I’m getting ready to buy the Powermatic drill press that is on sale at Rockler/Amazon this weekend. There aren’t many reviews on it here or anywhere else online and was wondering if any of you had it. I’ve been tossing back and fourth between the the Powermatic and the new Delta and I really like the variable speed control of the Powermatic. I have a bench top drill now and never change the belts because it’s just a hassle. I have never seen Powermatic stuff on sale and I think this is a good deal. Thoughts?

Check the reviews section. I think someone recently bought a large Delta DP that turned out to be a POS. They tried to get warranty work done via Delta, and replacement parts were an issue.

Someone else commented in that same review that they bought the P-matic and love it.

Here’s the thread. Keep in-mind that this is but ONE user’s experience.

I’ve been to the reviews and there are only two for the powermatic and they are both quite old. Was wondering if there are people out there that have them but never wrote a review.

I have the Delta and I have never had a single problem with it. The belt changes are extremely easy but I find myself not really doing that much speed changing. I really love the versatility of the table and that was the deciding factor, for me, on choosing the Delta over the PM. There were also some reviews of bad problems with the automatic belt system on the PM, when I was looking at getting mine. I would imagine they have been corrected by now. The PM is not a true variable speed, it still uses a belt driven system. The system automatically moves the belts, in response to the lever settings, I just didn’t have much faith in that system. I do like their digital readout though.

Jet has a new 17 inch BS out now that has some nice features, for a very good price. Have you checked it out yet? Jet is also doing 15% off now.

I have a friend that has one….now keep in mind that with one exception he is a powermatic guy. I have drooled over it many times, I would love to have one. The only bad thing I have noticed is that is seems kind of short for a DP of tha caliber, but that is a personal thing. ( and I am not all that tall) The varible speed looks to be awesome. I have two DP’s of my own so I have never actually drilled a hole with it, but I have been standing there when he has, and it looks like it is nice to me….it is on my list, for “someday”.
