Topic tags/keywords: bandsaw clamp plane

Many of you know that I have been working with my fingernails for a while. Finding the right tools at a good price is really hard sometimes. All my patient craigslist monitoring has finally paid to off.

I saw an add on Thursday night for some clamps. They looked good in the picture and I was willing to take a risk on them.

I got 2 rockler 30 inch aluminum sure foots and 2 30 inch split foot Bessys (I think) for $20.00. I know couldn’t buy one of those clamps for $20.00. The previous owner commented that I was the first reply he got out of 24.

It got me to thinking. His ad showed up at10.30 pm. I responded at 10.45 pm. Interesting… I got a good deal by surfing at bedtime.

So I surfed at 11.00 pm on a Friday night. I searched for planners first then bandsaws second. My jaw dropped when I saw a 14 inch Grizzly band saw for 200.00. I could see from his photo that he was clearly a woodworker with all those wooden clamps arranged neatly in the background. I responded immediately. I had a fitfull sleep with images of bandsaws being taken away by evil craigslist trolls. I woke at 6.00 am and sent another message. While I was typing, he sent me a reply. “Call me if you want to take a look.”

I called within a minute of seeing his reply.

70 minuted later, he fired up that mean green machine for me and stepped me through the features. I gave him the cash and we loaded it into the van. Then he grabbed 3 blades and handed them to me. One of the blades is used for resawing.

Then he asked if I was looking for anything else? I confessed that I should have invested in a planner before the band saw. He said, “I’m selling my Delta planner”. He showed me his 12.5 inch planner with metal stand. Now, I would not have even tried to look at a planner for $175 on CL. I would have thought it was too much for used equipment. But you see, I was there and I met the guy. His equipment was well maintained and in great shape. He told me the blades had been used a few times. I told him let’s do it. After we loaded up the planner, he handed me a package of replacement blades.

We had an awesome conversation but it had to end as his wife came around and gave him the ‘eye’. He was so busy sharing with me that he became late for an appointment.

I apologize for the poor quality images. They are just included for my tale of Christmas come early. I know I didn’t get the steal of a lifetime but I spent $395 and got great clamps, the grizzly band saw and a planner that has already saved me hours of work.

It’s too soon for me to draw any firm statistal conclusions about treasure hunting on Craigslist but I believe Friday night might be the best time to find a gem at a good price. I’m guessing people want to sell on Saturday so they post before they hit the hay on Friday night.

My next treasure has to be a drill press. I have some fine mortising attachments and bits I want to try out. Why would I have those expensive attachments and bits without even owning a drill press you may ask. I’ll just respond with this. I have met some of the finest and most generous people in my life right here on lumberjocks.

Happy Thanksgiving to my friends in the USA. To the rest of you, May the coming Holidays be awesome and memorable.

-- Thanks for all the lessons!

Congrats, Mark, on the treasures of woodworking….Man, you found a birdnest on the ground, and made out like a burgular…..I live in a small, small town, so we don’t have a CL anywhere close to us….But he did good, and you did better…..Ready to make sawdust now…..

Nice price for plug and play stuff. Congrats! Home Depot has a 4 pack of smaller Bessey bar clamps on sale in their Holiday/Black Friday section if you need some more. I think $30 for two 24s and two 12s – I can’t recall.

Not a bad deal overall I must say Mark you did well because you know the previous owner took care of his tools and that should add a little comfort .
Happy Thanksgiving .

Thanks for the quality confirmation my friends. James, the previous owner, knew exactly what he had and was not going to give the equipment away for free. On the other hand, he wasn’t greedy either. I like the plug and play comment. It seems to fit well.

You can’t imagine how happy I was to plane a sanding nightmare to 1\2 inch in a few passes. Oh yeah. I think I’ll make a band saw box to celebrate. ;)

Joe – he was selling his “full tilt” Shopsmith for 500. It was the loaded down with every accessory I’m aware of. He got it from his pop. He included 12 cutting tools to go with it. If someone is just starting out, they get everything in one. Awesome set up.

He has some very nice smaller power tools but he’s keeping all of them. The place he’s moving to has a community woodshop with a fulltime carpenter. I never heard of such a thing. He was taking about a couple of unisaws and powermatics. Yeah they have some newfangled Jet equipment as well.

Len – Happy Thanksgiving to you too my friend. The family is doing great and they are enjoying the vacation from their studies.

Ribs and Brisket. It’s all I can do to finish this post. Your handle has reminded me that I am HUNGRY.
