Topic tags/keywords: cheap cabinets

Is there a place where I can buy the type of material they use in the cheap cabinets like in Lowe’s etc. ½ inch pre-finished stuff that you can put a nice face on and not have to fool with the inside or outside of the cabinets?

Places like Manard’s has ¾ what I call glue chip or glued sawdust but I would like 3/8 and ½ inch plywood with a finish. Can’t seem to find a place to buy it but I see it in cheap cabinets a lot. larry

I have used that stuff from Menards and Home Depot and I can tell you it is pure crap.
The veneer is so thin, if you look at it wrong it falls off.
Even if you cut it with a plywood blade, the thin veneer just peels off the edges.
I will never buy it again.
Just get regular plywood and if you don’t want to put a finish on it just paint it.
It will look much better.
You can just get the pre finisher particle board stuff and that won’t peel as bad as that plywood.
I have see in in 1/4 and 1/2 at Menards.

I will use a 3/4 per finished maple plywood for cabinet interiors, its nice stuff.
You won’t get it at the box stores though.
Try a hardwood company.
You can get it in 1/4’‘and 1/2’’ also.

I get pre-finished, maple veneer plywood from my commercial wood supplier in Chicago. Any company that sells cabinet-grade plywoods should have it in stock.

If you buy it from actual hardwood suppliers, you will get good quality pre finished veneer.
Like the others just said, the big box stores just don’t offer it.
I think what you are looking for is called cabinet grade plywood. My local Menards sells it on a special order basis, but the cost is more that if I go to my hardwood supplier and buy it from them.

Thanks guys, I’ll try to locate a hardwood supplier somewhere around here. Seems Wayne Co Ohio doesn’t offer much for the woodworker or their needs. Might try Curry Lumber in Wooster. larry

I have found that taking some time to meet the staff that orders the wood and the guys out back who pull your orders, it really goes a long way in getting good service and good advice. (a box of donuts and a thermos of coffee helps)

We have a small mom and pop lumber supplier near by and having that relationship is worth its weight in gold.
I pay more, but I would not have it any other way.

You have to remember, most lumber yards are there for the commercial buyers. Us home wood worker wanna be’s can be more trouble than we are worth sometimes, so keep that in mind.

Thanks Paul I’ll see what I can drum up.

Brad, yeah it pays to be nice if you expect others to be nice to you. I really don’t know any of these guys around here as I only do my own work so I don’t have that much contact with them.

Thanks guys.
