I am looking into making my own guitar binding and possibly purfling while I work on this guitar project.
I could buy plastic, ABS, vinyl or pvc stuff, or even wooden binding, but that wouldn’t be true to the spirit I am making this guitar in.
For reference, check out my blog about how and why this is being done.
I would really like to be able to say that I made as much of this piece as I possibly could.
I need about 10’ of binding and purfling, and have an idea to get a nice holly board to start with.

The problem is, this need to be about 5-7 feet long, and with the mistakes I know I’ll make, I’ll most likely need at least twice as much.

This stuff needs to be 1/16” thick and for the binding around 3/8” wide, purfling about 5/16” wide.

My thought is to make a sled with a dado in it, put the strip in and plane the wood down by hand. The problem comes in because it needs to be very consistent on the bonding side. If there is much difference in thickness it will eventually show when the glue dries and the wood acclimates to the surrounding.

Cut strips in a table saw, sand one side of them, rout your rabbet to glue the purfling into and glue it on. From there using a scraper along the outside edge of the purfling will take it down evenly all along the length of the guitar body. It should be proud (stick up a bit) anyway so you can take it down to the level of the guitar sides.

That’s the way I do it anyway. You can also glue together thin strips that you can buy as they are much to thin to cut without a special machine. that way you can get that alternating black/white stripe effect.

Have your say...
