This may have been asked before but I don't remember seeing it posted. Who, or what, determines what projects get into the top 15? Who, or what, determines what projects get into the top 3? Is it view count or is there someone on high who determines how they are rated? Just curious.

It is a algorithm based on number of views, number of comments and times favorited, it's all computer based, heavily weighted to the number of favorites. There is no judging on subjective factors such as merit or beauty or talent. This pisses some people off no end, but think of how many would be pissed if there were a panel of humans judging on such subjective criteria. Projects that make the top 3 are usually shop projects as people tend to favorite those, good photography helps as well as showing and explaining some of the construction as that stimulates conversation and comments.

This is a little off from what you are asking.

I noticed that when you click on one of the "Daily Top 15" it goes to the LJ's Home Page whose Project it is, and is usually noted 0n there as one of the "Daily Top Three" for ONE particular day. When you click on that "Daily Top Three" on his page it takes you to the "Daily Top Three" for that particular day.

Only One Problem! (That I Checked Thoroughly) There WILL BE anywhere from SIX To TWELVE "Daily Top Three" Projects for that SAME DAY!

Could this be a result of our New "Area" Time Posting Method? Something that got "Fixed" that (In my opinion only) Didn't need "Fixed"? So much for the "Prestige" of being in the "Daily Top Three"!

I did Six of them, just to make sure. Three are below with the particulars on them.

What Next! OH! That "Announcement" on the "All Forums Page". It doesn't go to the "Kitchen Design Page" as stated anymore. It goes to "WomansForum.com" (One of Escalates Other Clients) and a page full of Coupons that you're suppose to be able to Download. I tried to download some. NOPE!

Chuck:

Maybe, but if you look at the last one shown above, (Oct 2). All (11) NOW show on Their Home Page, as being one of the "Daily Top Three" on Oct 2.

I know what you are saying about shuffling in and out of the Top Three Spot (I Think …LOL..) and I think it might have something to do with this New Time Set Thing. With the Old Way there was only 3 in the "Daily Top Three", for any given day.

From Memory I THINK there was also a Category shown as "Daily Top Three" with only Three Projects in it. It seems to have been replaced by "Top 15" projects. A "Daily Top Three" Ongoing List is still there but they are ALL of the "Daily Top Three", Hundreds/Thousands, ALL Of Them!

To get to All of the above "Daily Top Three", I had to go to one of them on the LJ Members Page from the "Top 15" and click on His "Daily Top Three" Heading to get to the "Daily Top Three" Category as shown above.

The Blank Spaces you see (2) in the last one, at the bottom, was the beginning of the "Daily Top Three" for Oct 3rd. The 2 blank spaces at the Top was the end of the Daily "Top Three" for Oct 1st.

Not the least bit confusing is it!!! ..... LOL….

Regards: Rick

EDIT: I went back to the "Daily Top Three" List and started at Nov 16th. to see what they showed on the Members Page (As Below). Another Little "Kink" was also found. Some of them on the List were shown as a Day Before and some where shown as a Day After but they were on the Members Page as "Daily Top Three" Nov.16th.

Now. If I can figure out how to show these side by side a Miracle has just occurred …LOL..

DAMN!! Couldn't do it. They wanted to run into each other! Enough Already !

Well, I hesitate to say anything negative but at the risk of being fussed at I will.

I am highly disappointed in the woodworking sites I visit and the "Top 15" is a prime example of the disappointments. I would expect those "Top 15" to be projects which would be a little on the difficult side and cause the reader to search for how the project was designed and created. Instead, some of the projects, like the last set of cutting boards with inset handles, showed little creativity and was something that could be banged out in a short while, looking more like a high school woodshop projects. I was hoping for projects which showed creativity, advance planning and talent but most miss that mark by a wide margin.

I apologize for offending anyone if I did. But the "Top 15" misses the mark and a lot of the advice given here on LJ is either dangerous or so far off that it should be avoided.

If I got this right, to get into the "daily" spots project is in the running for 24 hours when posted, based on # views, # comments and # favorite. That seems OK to me but add one more detail. Today is Nov. 18th, top 15 would be from Nov. 17th postings. Current top 15 would be changed to "in the running for top 15". Would be based on the same (number views, comments, likes) but time would run from midnight to midnight on the date. Maybe even add a top for week, month or even year. With some sort of award for top for the year. Imagine, a framed certificate stating "lumberjocks.com project of the year"!

As for the above comment, (boardSMITH) I'm not a professional woodworker. I am a hobbyist. I make simple and complex projects but I put my heart and soul into each one and take pride in my work. If my fellow wood workers take the time to view, favorite or comment on them then I am happy. They noticed the pride I put into my work. IMO. If my project makes the top 3 or top 15 I feel I deserve it based on reactions from fellow members not the complexity of the project.

I guess the wedge would get the project of the year award, a gag post gone very bad.

Yup, the daily top 3 just means you hit it within 24 hours after being posted. I don't follow it all that closely, but the other day I had one that hit #1, and I noticed that another project hit the top 3 in the last 5 minutes is was eligible. One reason the listing is like this is so it doesn't matter when you post the project.

I've had a few projects that have hit the top 3, but the one that hit #1 was, by no means, my best project, but it was a gift idea posted in the fall before Christmas, so it got favorited a lot because other folks, I assume, wanted to remember it as a gift idea.

Some of the real masterpieces on here don't get as many favorites b/c other Jocks don't aspire to make them.

I hardly ever favorite something because I admire it, but usually because I want to remember it for a future project.

Maybe just rename it to "Top Traffic Projects" as that's more what it is…

Each project is eligible for a 24-hour period of time starting from when they're initially posted. That means that a project could reach top 3 at the 22hr mark, and then it gets removed 2hrs later. That's why there's more than 3 "Daily Top 3" projects for any given day.

Sounds to me like BoardSMITH is looking more for a mechanism for competition rather than a recognition. On computer modding sites that I participate on, they have a "Mod of the Month" competition, which is a collection of nominated project work logs in progress that's selected by forum staff, then there's an open vote by members. Multi-vote system (can vote for more than 1 option, but can only vote once).

Thanks for the replies. I knew there was some sort of a mechanism but didn't know how to figure it out.

Mosquito - No I am not looking for a competition over recognition but I do appreciate quality work and craftsmanship.

I do wish they would create a parade of projects and let the all show up in the "Top 15" and have a place in the sun if even only for a few minutes. Using a computer model to choose takes away from the projects.

A project will also get pushed higher on the "Top" list if it is cross-linked to other sites like Facebook.

Martin gave a general idea of the algorithm when he introduced this.

There was also a bug that may or may not have been resolved where you could refresh the page in the browser and the hit counter would continue to go up. This would only happen if you were not logged in. So, a person could post a project, log out, and then refresh the browser (e.g. F5 key) on their own project and watch the counter go up.

Ah, fond memories of the cooperative experimentation that lead to the development of the ViewBooster4000 (VB4K) involving a stone placed on the F5 key!

Does anyone need a warm bottle and a dry diaper? It is a zero cost site. Looking a gift horse in the mouth is bad form, so I just accept what is offered with gratitude and don't bite the hand of the benefactor. It is our choice to visit the site or not, we are not forced to do so. Without this site I would not have found so many wonderful friends. Some of those friends may not be exactly perfect human beings so I accept their quirks and deviations as part of the gift of friendship. I do not visit their house and complain about how they decorate it. OK, RANT OVER.

Looks like I was totally misunderstood. Free site. Yes. I asked a question and the question was answered. Can the "Top 15" be done better, in my mind yes. Will it be done better, probably not. At least not as long as it is accepted with blind gratitude.

Mosquito: (With Respect)

I'm not exactly sure what the last part of this means… "Each project is eligible for a 24-hour period of time starting from when they're initially posted. That means that a project could reach top 3 at the 22hr mark, and then it gets removed 2hrs later.(That Is Correct while they are still Active.) That's why there's more than 3 "Daily Top 3" projects for any given day."

The pages I Posted up in Post #6 are in no way Active as you can see by the Dates on them. There's more than 3 "Daily Top Three" because that's the way it NOW shows on there and on the Members Page and it always will.

In my Post #8 I deliberately went back to Nov 16th to show, what shows on the Members Page from the "Daily Top Three" Page. That's only 8 of about 10 or 12 for Nov 16th. They will also stay that way.

I guess you could say there really is no longer such a thing as ONLY 3 …"Daily Top Three"

Mudflap4869:

"Does anyone need a warm bottle and a dry diaper?" No. Nobody does on this Post, Nobody is "Looking A Gift Horse In The Mouth." and Nobody is "Biting The Hand Of The Benefactor."

WE are ALL attempting to sort out what The "Daily Top Three" really is, or means. No one is Whining, Bitching, Complaining or suggesting It should be Changed or Eliminated.

We are attempting to establish a Full Understanding of the "Daily Top Three" for the benefit of ALL LJ Members.

I'm Pleased that You have found so many wonderful Friends on here. I Trust You now feel better after your RANT!

Rick, Put away the boldface . . . hard to read.

Mosquito tried to explain it to you. Whenever a project is posted, the 24 hour clock, for that project, begins. If that project hits the top 3 at any point during that 24 hour period, then it is listed as a top 3 project for the day it reaches that point. Because projects are constantly being added and rolling off, most only get to the top three late in their 24 hour period. The reason it is this way, I believe, is because it doesn't discriminate as to when the project is posted. If I post a project at 11 pm, I still have 24 hours to reach the top3, not just one hour. It does mean that more that 3 projects reach the top 3 on almost every day, I would expect, with some days having many more than that. Some projects reach the top 3 and then fall back out of it before they roll off.

Does that make sense to you now?

Charles:

"Rick, Put away the boldface . . . hard to read." Thank you for your advice. If YOU don't mind, I will continue to Compose a Post in whatever way I choose to do so. Considering that I have 6547 Posts behind me and No one has ever complained about "Bolding" before. Obviously "Not Bolding" is Your Personal Preference Only.

"Does that make sense to you now?" I read it & replied to it. Perhaps I'll read it over another time and let you know. Well. Maybe not.

It's not my Post and I'm now done here.

Top 15 is a very complex algorithm perfected over years of trial and error that picks 15 random projects…

No the whole Top 3 thing is baffling sometimes. I looked at a project the other day which had only been up for an hour and didn't have many views compared to projects posted around the same time and it was Top 3 already. It was deserving of Top 3 for sure, but there was no way it earned it through an obvious methodology like views or favorites.
