I’ve just built my own router cabinet and now I want to design my own table.. Right now I don’t have the funds to buy a plate and I have the following question:

Where the router bit comes out of the table should the opening being square or circular?
Also how big does it need to be? my table top will be 36” wide by 18” deep

Thanks

The one real router table I built I used a piece of melamine
for. I think I threw the table out… it got wet or
something and I had acquired a nice steel one so
didn’t need it anymore.

Anyway, I excavated a 3” square hole 1/4” deep
and cut a bunch of hardboard squares to use as table
inserts. I think it’s really a good solution and easy
to do. I should note that the router base was
screwed to the table and I had another base
for freehand use.

You can buy router bases of course that accept
various inserts for zero clearance cutting.

An inch and a half round hole is pretty standard, unless you have some really large diameter bits. I’m not sure what the point of a square hole would be.

I made plates from 1/2” plexiglas. Got it from a local neon sign company. The guy just gave me some scraps. Think they are 8×12” But you should make them the same size as ones you can order from Rockler or other supplier. I drilled holes for the center to be slightly bigger than the bits I use in them.

A square hole would be easier to make different inserts
