Just saw the “Announcement” (ahem, advertisement) for RTA cabinets on the main forum page. Way to reach your target audience by advertising to a group of people who actually build your product themselves. Not exactly your bread and butter customers. I don’t mind ads if they are relevant, this seems like a waste of everyone’s time.

Not only that, but it is in no way shape or form a site announcement. Needs to be removed.

Adblock doesn’t do anything about announcements like that. I think we will a lot more of this because of add blocking apps.

I hadn’t even noticed it until I saw this thread. I had to look. Yup, it is up there ;-)

I thought that we all see somewhat different ads based on information mined by advertisers, which mines the websites we visit. So yesterday I was seeing camera lens ads since I have been looking into a new lens for my Nikon.
Today, I am seeing not only kitchen cabinet ads, but also insulation and phone ads. I was looking into my ATT home internet situation yesterday, hence the ATT ad.
Is that not the way it works?
So if we are on a wood website, could the data suggest a wooden made product, although we would certainly make it ourselves?

thumbs up on this thread – James

For those of you that mentioned Adblock, it doesn’t block the Announcement that James mentions, I know because I have and am using Adblock and I’m still seeing the announcement, as James put it (ahem, advertisement) meaning it’s not a popup that adblock would block it’s embedded into the page prob by a script in other words no matter what kind of blocker you are using you’re going to see the announcements I presume.

But saying this it doesn’t really bother me since it’s not one of those annoying popups it’s just at the top of the page but I do agree with James in that it’s not a very thought out announcement and a waste of theirs and our time.

Normally that is true Tennessee, but in this case they are trying to pass of an ad as an announcement of particular importance to us. So important, in fact that it has to precede all the forum threads. Add to that the fact that the ad is almost completely irrelevant to woodworkers, well, it just deserves a slow clap.

I have to disagree that it’s irrelevant to woodworking since they are designing cabinets which would fall under furniture making. I’m sure some of the woodworkers on here do this for a living and maybe one of them even works there. Who knows? If it helps bring money to the site and keep it free for everyone, it’s not bothersome to me.

At the end of the day if you want a free website you’re going to need to put up with ads. I can’t imagine that the people running this site are doing it for charity.

The point isn’t that there are ads. The point is that the ad is irrelevant to woodworkers. They are advertising one of the products that we make. Its like going into a Lexus factory and trying to sell Fords. They already make cars why would they need a different one. We are woodworkers and build cabinets why would we need to buy them. If they are going to advertise to us at least make it relevant.

There are probably a lot of “consumers” of these ads that get here by Google and other search engines.

And, how exactly should this site be ran, maintained and supported without ads? About the only option would be to charge every member a few.
