I have a Skil router I got from a flea market for like 10 or 15 bucks. It’s not a great router so I was thinking about mounting it upside down and put those drill press sanding drums that act as a spindle sander in it to make it into a spindle sander. Will this work or will the router spin to fast?

IMHO…. it would spin WAY to fast.

I think it would work, but I also think you are right about the speed. I would think Burning the wood would be very easy. Maybe one of those speed control devices can be installed? I think if I ended up with a spare router I would consider building a horizontal mortise.
