So, I want to buy some mineral spirits.

What I find is low-odor, crystal Klean, low VOC PANSY A$$ MINERAL SPIRITS!!!

These are causing my finishes to become milky…

I want good old stinky-a$$, carcinogenic freakin mineral spirits!!

Suggestions?

Just buy paint thinner. Mineral spirits is the same thing, low odor MS has some of the compounds removed, so paint thinner is actually the stronger solvent.

Fred, is “paint thinner” ok to use in making a wiping varnish which is what I mostly use it for?

Yep, I do it all the time. Just make sure you don’t gab on of the newer “green” products. Not sure what they are but they don’t work.

See if you can buy liquid camp stove fuel. Make sure that it contains naphtha, also known as white gas, rather than butane or alcohol. This is about the same thing as VM&P naphtha. It evaporates faster than MS, but it will do the same things as MS. Fred and others are right, regular paint thinner is roughly the same as MS.

I used it on a project recently to thin finish to a wipe-able consistency. Other than the very strong paint thinner odor that took a while to disappear, it worked like a charm.
