My wife and I went to an estate sale this weekend and I think I got a pretty good deal. I found a Stanley 9 1/2 (not sure how old it is) and a Wards Master Rabbet plane that is a Stanley no. 78 clone. It doesn’t have any iron adjustments so I believe it is pre-1920. I got both for $30. They were both VERY rusty. I have been wanting both a good block plane and a shoulder plane for a while now. I was so excited to get them that I neglected to take true ‘before’ photos. Here they are after I removed the rust and sharpened the irons. I still need to do some work on the soles and since the 9 1/2 is pretty beat up I might try removing the japanning and freshening it up a bit.

What do you guys think? Since the block plane is in such poor shape I know it isn’t worth much. I can’t find much in the line of sales info for the Wards Master but considering the general price for rabbet planes I think I did fairly well.

Nice find, congratulations. I love when old planes pop out of estate/garage sales or flea markets.

I think the Wards Master plane was actually made by Stanley for Wards. If you can find a depth stop for it, you’ll have a really good tool for your $30

Nice finds. They should be good additions to your shop.
