I have been looking at different small 10” band saws and notice that the Jet 10” and Masterforce 10” are identical except for different paint and brand. The same goes for the Rikon 10” and the Craftsman 10”

We all know that this happens with a lot of the tools. The one that comes to mind the most is the 15” planers. It seems that there are so many the same but with different paint and brand. Are they really the same? or are there differences in quality of motors, bearings, switches and quality control?

Do you buy the less well known brand name such as the Masterforce 10” Band saw or stay with the better known Jet Brand? They look identical. The manuals are so similar with the same pictures.

I can’t speak specifically to the Jet vs Masterforce, as I’haven’t seen both in person, but this dilemma is becoming pretty common when looking at woodworking machinery. There are a limited number of manufacturers for power equipment, so many come off the same assembly lines. In some cases the only difference is the paint jobs, in other cases, the external appearance and parts are similar, but there is a difference in the internals and working parts—bearings, wheels, motor, etc.

The factories in China and Taiwan are capable of building very good machines or absolute crap. It just depends on what is requested and spec’d out by the company that placed the order and how well they monitor the results coming from that factory.
