Topic tags/keywords: walnut crotch free wood

Two years ago I bartered for three BIG logs from a sycamore that blew down in a storm. In return, I cut the rest of the tree into firewood. As a gesture of thanks, I made the owners an end grain cutting board, which surprised and pleased them greatly.

I got a call yesterday from that same person, who now has some walnut he was given for firewood. He asked me if I wanted any, and when I examined it, I found four pieces of crotch like this:

His sycamore is in its second year of air drying in my cousin’s barn, and soon it will be ready to use. He’s going to get a small hanging cabinet of sycamore, maybe with walnut crotch door panels.

It pays to make friends.

Congratulations! On the great walnut wood, the sycamore wood, and the new friend. I am sure you will also get a lot of good word-of-mouth publicity out of this also – which might lead to more free wood and more new friends and more word-of-mouth advertising…

I look forward to seeing what you make with that walnut.

It pays to be kind and generous, and that was what you were. Good deeds begat good deeds.
