well I got my shopsmith out and started playing with it some today,,,i tried turning something on it but the spur center keep releasing it at times when I was turning,,,anything thing better at holding the wood than a spur center,,

Been awhile since I turned on a shopsmith. Are you using a live center in the tail stock? A dead center will wear the workpiece resulting in it loosening during turning. You would need to re tighten the workpiece to compensate for the wear. The screw center above would be better regardless of which center you are using.
