I have no idea what they sell for on ebay etc ,but the variable speed is almost certainly done with an invertor built into the machine.Which is not an expensive thing to add to any lathe these days. It converts from three phase to single and also allows you to have a great control over the speed right down to almost zero r p m with full torque.I wish you well however someone else is going to have to advise re this particular model as they don’t sell those here in the UK.Compare it with some other good lathes and then add on a couple of hundred bucks or less for the drive unit vfd variable frquency unit.Have fun it looks like quite a nice lathe from the photos but that explains very little.
